Genetics Research – Value 15
- You will research and produce a historical timeline to illustrate the many significant scientific discoveries and some of the scientists involved in developing the current concept of the gene - from Mendel in the 1800’s, to the Human Genome Project in 2000. To make the historical timelines more meaningful to you, relate the time frame to an event that has some relevance to you (to help you remember dates).
- Investigate a career of your choice related to this unit on genetics and heredity. Examples may include: biochemist, genetic counselor, laboratory technologist, geneticist, oncologist, etc. Give a description of your findings.
- Research one of the tools or techniques currently available to study genetics. Areas that may be considered include the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) process, DNA ‘fingerprinting’ and gel electrophoresis, gene probes, recombinant DNA, cloning, genetic markers and gene mapping. Write a brief report on your findings.
